I have had my kitchen re-done, and the final part of the job was to get the decorating done. A friend of mine who is a professional decorator has being doing the job for me at a reduced rate, but one of my other friends is convinced that I had still paid too much. Can you please tell me how much you think the job should have cost? (Then I’ll tell you how much I have paid! lol)
The job consists of:
2 coats of paint (the kitchen is about 2 and half metres by about 4 metres)
removing the old vinyl floor tiles that were there,
laying and grouting new ceramic tiles (for which he moved the appliances out for me, and put them back in when he’d finished)
re-plastering the walls where necessary,
mosaic tiling all around the walls above the work-tops up to the level of the sockets.
It is about 4 days’ work in total.
If you are a decorator, how much would you charge for all this please?

I’m looking to lay flooring down on about 200 square feet of hallway, 30 square feet of bathroom, and about 100 square feet of kitchen. For the hallway, what should it cost if I went with either linoleum or tile? For the bathroom and kitchen, how about the cost of tile?

I’d like to remodel my kitchen and add a built-in microwave. I’m not sure I’m using the correct terminology, but basically I want it over the range. I read that built-in microwaves need their own circuit. Since my house is older, I’m assuming I will have to add a circuit. Does anyone know how much this will cost for an elctrician to do this? My house is a split level, if that helps. Thanks for any info!
We are building a house in Gorakhpur, India. Please suggest flooring solutions other tha vitrified tiles and marble which prove to be pretty costly. Someone suggested white terrazzo flooring, but is it immune to stains and can all masons lay it ? Mosaic flooring is not an option.

I got an estimate today that I thought was quite high. My kitchen backsplash is about 38 square feet. I have purchased all the materials that are needed. The tiles are actually on a mesh backing, which will save on time. There is very minimal cutting that is needed as the space is between the cabinets and the lip of the countertop is 12 1/4 inch. I really think that I would be able to do it myself but am not taking that chance. The contractor wants to charge me $450 for the labor telling me that it would normally be $800. That seems a bit steep in my opinion. I mean I am providing all the materials, All they have to do is lay it.

I know this is a ridiculous question to most people because the cost varies SO much depending on what you put into it, but I also know cost varies from location to location… and I’ve searched the internet finding people in the city saying they’ve paid a quarter million dollars remodeling their house. THAT sounds ridiculous to me?? So, here’s my situation…
My husband and I are looking at a house for sale in a rural area of West Michigan (where house prices have plummeted). It’s on 8 acres of land with two huge beautiful barns in good shape. The house, however, needs A LOT of work such as…
- A new septic system
- All new plumbing
- All new wiring
- A new roof (trusses and all, as the roof is about to collapse)
- A new furnace
That’s only counting the repairs it needs to make it livable. That’s not counting what we WANT to do to make the space even remotely nice. The layout is absolutely horrible. We would want to knock down walls and create a new layout all together. This would include two new bathrooms AND a kitchen. I’m not looking for anything super fancy and expensive such as a 50K kitchen remodel with granite countertops and such. We were actually considering buying cabinets off craigslist that have been taken out of someone’s house. We’ve seen whole kitchens (cabinets, appliances, faucets, etc) for $2500 or less. We also plan to do much of the work ourselves. We have talked to a family friend of ours who is a builder who is saying although it does need a lot of work, he doesn’t believe it would be more than 50K for a complete remodel. I shouldn’t be questioning a builder, but is this NORMAL price? If you live out in the country and have done a complete remodel on a house, how much did you pay all together? And also, do you believe this is worth it? I believe just the barns and land is worth 50K; I’m not sure whether the headache of remodeling is though. Help me out?
I might also add that the house is 1900 square feet, not counting the basement. The basement is block, but it’s not your typical Michigan dirt basement that’s found in homes of this age. And we were told that the foundation is good despite the structural problems with the roof.
It really depends on what all you plan on doing and what type of products you will be using. The cheapest way to go would be to purchase stock cabinetry, use laminate or tile countertops, and vinyl or pergo flooring. I’d say you could probably do that for $2000 tops if you are doing everything yourself.
