Help Can You Give Me Advice About Topps Tiles?

Got an approved tile fitter from Topps Tiles to fit my travertine tiles. Had to end the project as not happy with him He had apparently sealed the tiles but none had been laid. Spoke to a manager who agreed to refund the whole amount of tiles and materials and offerred another fitter. We by that time had decided to ask our friend. He then told me that as the tiles had been sealed he could not sell them on and would have to go in the bin so whatever I offerred him he would accept.
I like the tiles but as I have been very suspicious of other things that were going on with the company I am worried that the tiles might be faulty or something and just wandered what you would do?
Also a few of the tiles look a slightly different colour to the others – more reddish in them – do you think they are from a different batch or does it not matter with natural stone?

I Need Advice On Laying Self-adsive Vinyl Floor Tiles, Please.?

Hi. This is my first time posting here. I have a question that I’m hoping someone can help me with. We had to pull up the carpet in the hallway of our home because I couldn’t stand the odor coming from it any longer. We had cats in the past that preferred it to their litter box.
Due to financial restrictions, my husband and I decided that we would go with what I refer to as a “temporary, indefinite fix”. We are going to install some of the self-adhesive floor tiles. Our dilemma in installing these tiles is where to measure and snap the chalk lines for lining up the tiles.
The hallway is in a T shape. The hallway is not the same width at one end as it is on the other end of either part of the T. (The builders didn’t do a very good job of squaring up their work.) The top part of the T has six doors leading to bedrooms, closets and bathroom. The bottom of the T has one closet door in it. The bottom part of the T stops at the foyer which has parquet type wood flooring.
The instructions that came with the tile said to draw a line 12″ to the wall that is farthest from the door. I can’t exactly do that since there are so many doors. I thought about measuring the line 12″ from the wall that makes the top part of the T, but then I run into the problem with the walls not being square. Is this still the best place to start? If I do this, then I will have partial pieces meeting up with the foyar floor. Will this look alright? I plan to put a wood piece down where the two different flooring meet to give it a “professional” finished look.
Also, should I mark a chalk line down the center of the bottom part of the T to cross with the line on the top part of the T?
I hope all this make sense and that someone out there can help me. Thanks in advance for any help.

Advice, Please…?

I have a job interview this morning at 9:45 at Lowe’s. My background is in social service but I’m kinda burned out at this point. I’ve done some of my own home repair stuff like painting, plastering, hanging picture rail molding, laying a ceramic tile floor, kitchen cabinet refinishing, taping and mudding sheet rock etc…..you get the idea…a do it yourselfer…sort of. I’m a 59 year old woman that would really like the opportunity to give this a shot. I need advice and encouragement….thanks

Advice About Damage To Grout?

I recently had some ceramic tiles laid in my bathroom. Due to illness the plasterer came after the floor had been laid. The plasterer then managed to get plaster dust in the wet grout and now it just looks a mess. I have asked him to resolve this. He wants to clean the grout with ‘brick acid’ rather than regrout the tiles. I am really concerned about this and the potential damage it could do to the new tiles. Can anyone advise me on the best course of action- is this acid ok to use on ceramic tiles? Many thanks

Financial Advice Please. $90,000 For A Remodel?

My husband and I live in central Ca. We own an older 3 bedroom/ 1 bathroom house. It needs some work, but our payment is 530/mo. We only owe 80,000. 20,000 of which is interest free. The problem is that it does need to be updated, soon (New roof, remodel kitchen and bathroom) Since we have 3 kids and pretty much live from paycheck to paycheck we cant afford to have the work done. We are willing to do the work ourselves and have a lot of practical knowledge, but lack the funds. We heard about a program for low income families. They quoted us $90,000 to do the work. We would have to pay them back in 30 years, and the loan is interest free. But we would rather stay out of debt if possible. Would this be a good idea? I feel its a little pricey. Am I wrong?
The work includes, duel pane windows, new roof, redo all electrical, new duel pack unit, add a bathroom, remodel kitchen and bathroom, add onto 1 bedroom, stucco outside, new carpet.

Advice For Making A Patio With Paving Stones?

I plan to put a patio in my garden. I have some paving slabs which are about an inch thick. I have never done this kind of thing before and I need some advice. The top of the patio ( near the house ) will be higher that the bottom ( by the lawn ) so I need to slope the patio slightly. I’ll try to get an even slope by putting in some pegs with string connecting the 2 to show the angle. I’ll make some sort of spacer to have an even gap between slabs.
The area I’m looking to patio has had slabs resting on it for a few months, so it is compacted soil. Can I just go ahead, put some sand down, lay the slabs then cement in the gaps? If not, why not?
I must cut a few of the paving stones.
Can I use a big angle grinder for this?
Will it make a lot of mess?
Do I have to cut through the whole slab or is it like a wall tile where you only need to cut through partially then it will break cleanly somehow?
Any ideas or advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Any Advice Out There For Painting (versus Staining) Unfinished Kitchen Cabinets?

I recently completed a small remodel job on our kitchen. My wife is keen on staining the unfinished oak front (inexpensive) cabinets. I’m thinking how about a little color and paint instead. Any recommendations on brand (middle of the road) with low gloss and waterproof? Also, do I need a wood conditioner like the good folks at Lowes’s recommended if I stain? If not, do I need any kind of primer or anything else? Many thanks to all you pro’s :-)
