Kitchen Remodel – New Tiles Over Entire Floor ?
Wondering if the way to do this is to lay down new tile over the entire floor and then put new cabinets on top of the tile. the house I am in now has the cabinets laid on the underflooring with the tiles only coming up to the edge of the cabinet.
thought it would be best to have tiles over the entire floor to protect against water, etc..
You are correct in your thinking…lay the flooring over the entire floor, then place the cabinets on top of the floor. That is the finished professional way to do it.
It would be better to do the whole floor and set the cabinetry on top of that. This is because you may eventually want to change the layout of the kitchen and it would be very difficult to find matching tile later on. Also, you get the moisture protection of having the tile along the entire floor. That’s what my tiler did when I redid my kitchen. It was more expensive, because it required more tile. But, if you’re replacing all the cabinets, it’s definitely the better way to go.
If someone replaced the kitchen floor without replacing the cabinets, it obviously makes sense to just tile up to the bases of the cabinets. And, that’s probably what happened in your kitchen when that floor was put in.
I have been debating this exact same question.
I decided to put the flooring on the entire floor then place the cabinetry on top of the floor.
This way, IF I ever want to change anything, the entire floor is covered and I don’t set myself up (or anyone else for that matter) for a future nightmare. It seems like the only right way to go about the remodel, after much thought.
You can do it either way but why spend money on tiles you will never see? Secondly you can do a better layout with your tile if you have the base cabinets installed first. You wouldn’t want to end up with a sliver of tile showing against the cabinets.
