How Much Should This Decorating Have Cost Me?
I have had my kitchen re-done, and the final part of the job was to get the decorating done. A friend of mine who is a professional decorator has being doing the job for me at a reduced rate, but one of my other friends is convinced that I had still paid too much. Can you please tell me how much you think the job should have cost? (Then I’ll tell you how much I have paid! lol)
The job consists of:
2 coats of paint (the kitchen is about 2 and half metres by about 4 metres)
removing the old vinyl floor tiles that were there,
laying and grouting new ceramic tiles (for which he moved the appliances out for me, and put them back in when he’d finished)
re-plastering the walls where necessary,
mosaic tiling all around the walls above the work-tops up to the level of the sockets.
It is about 4 days’ work in total.
If you are a decorator, how much would you charge for all this please?

£600-800 plus materials for one man for four days. But you could easly get quotes for double or half that. It is down to the individual, his overheads, how popular he or she is.
I can’t see how all that was done properly in four days though.
If you supplied all materials, tiles (wall and floor) and paints etc and it took say 5 days work, for a friend at reduced rate say £300-£450, as a proper job covering all overheads and other costs say £600 -£800, depends on many factors and these are very rough guesses based on what you have said and if there was only the one person doing it for you.
you should be looking at around £100 a day,thats about the going rate.
I’d probably have paid around 450/500 quid.
did you buy the paint and tiles? the grout? If it’s an issue for you and it’s really a friend then I would ask him for a breakdown of costs so I could get accurate insurance for the kitchen. Paint is negligible but tile is spendy and then some (up to 10 dollars a 4″ X 4″ piece) Labor, well he’s your friend and should NOT have charged you full price. So, on top of the materials probably about 500.00 for labor and equipment upkeep. The job could have cost anything from 2500 to over 10,000.00 american depending on the tile chosen…
