Can I Put Self-sticking Tiles Over The Current Laminate Flooring?

My husband and I are closing on our new house Wednesday. The kitchen still has the old laminate flooring from the 50’s, and I want to give it a TEMPORARY, inexpensive, face lift. If I went to Menards or Home Depot and purchased their self-sticking tiles, would I be able to lay those over the current laminate?

We bought our house 2 years ago. Our previous owners have done what you have done, twice. We have 3 layers of flooring in our kitchen. The bottom two are solid and the top is the 12′ self stick tiles. The top tiles are coming off the 2nd layer. The corners and edges don’t want to stick very well at all. So I personally wouldn’t advise it, as those tiles can still be fairly costly. You may want to rip up the floor yourself and have Menards or Home Depot come install a solid vinyl floor. A temporary fix might not be too temporary, or cheap, depending on kitchen size. Unfortunately, we are stuck with this floor until we can afford to do it right. GL

It should work if you clean the floor well and probably use a de-glossing agent to dull the floor and let the tile stick better.
But, considering this is a temporary thing, you might be better off just dealing with the floor and saving the money for the tiles towards a new floor. The stick on tiles aren’t all that inexpensive and for something you plan on throwing away, it seems even more so.
We cleaned our floor and then used some throw rugs to help “hide” the floor until we could replace it.

I just installed my kitchen with tiles from Home depot(traffic master original brand to be exact) and it specifically states do not install over laminate flooring…the reason being laminate flooring is made to expand and contract and the tiles do not do this..open up the box of tiles..each one has a broochure in it for proper instilation..You will have problems with it if you install directly over laminate..here are some links also supporting this matter..http://www.ifloor.com/flooring-expert/20…

I agree with Scott on this , it might not stick ! Why would you go and spend money that you could have spent on something else beats me! just clean the floor and if it’s as bad as you said you can wait and have a new floor installed , aside from that retro is back . just apply a coat of wax and add mat by the sink .

Maybe. If the old floor is just old but still in good condition then yes. rememebr tho that any imperfections, bubbles, dimples, may show thru to the new floor

We did it and it was fine. Just make sure the current floor is in good condition.

This is something I’d ask the folks at Home Depot.
