Advice, Please…?

I have a job interview this morning at 9:45 at Lowe’s. My background is in social service but I’m kinda burned out at this point. I’ve done some of my own home repair stuff like painting, plastering, hanging picture rail molding, laying a ceramic tile floor, kitchen cabinet refinishing, taping and mudding sheet rock etc…..you get the idea…a do it yourselfer…sort of. I’m a 59 year old woman that would really like the opportunity to give this a shot. I need advice and encouragement….thanks

    good luck,Duckie.
remember that young’uns don’t have your presence, your life experience, and your knowledge of people. These are the most important things you can bring to the table at any retail job interview.what you are selling is YOU.

I admire you for making the career switch. So many people stick out jobs that they are miserable in. Your enthusiasm for doing something you enjoy will help you land this job. And as far as your age, that just shows that you have some experience under your belt. Good luck, and if Lowes doesn’t want you, I’ll bet Home Depot will!

I would LOVE to have a smart, helpful woman answer my home repair questions at Lowe’s. The guys assume I know the basics, and I don’t have a clue. If the folks at Lowe’s have any sense at all than they will hire you today. Good luck!

You could be a great help for women who want to try to do things themselves but find talking to the men a little intimidating. Good luck!

You sound really nervous! What helps me at times like these is just imagining the thing happening positively and imagining it in more detail and more and more. You get the idea. Just keep doing it, you’ll be more confident. You’ll be abit nervous but tthats not such a bad thing. You cant really do anything more than being confident at this point – so just be confident. Other than that dont worry too much. The way you’re worried about this, its clear that you care about it so you wont mess it up. Im sure you’ll do well :)

Be positive and let them know what you enjoyed doing . They don’t need to know your age or that you were burnt out with social work.
I applied to work in a fabric store in my late fifties thinking if they didn’t hire me I had nothing to lose. I was shocked when they did hire me and I was there for four years and met a lot of wonderful people. We tend to think that getting older is a liability but it is a bonus because we are more reliable and have a lifetime of experience.
Let us know how you make out, we are all rooting for you!

Duckie, I believe that your experience working with people combined with your do-it-yourself work at home will make you very appealing to Lowes! Good Luck!

I’m late getting in too, but just wanted to say you sound perfect for the job. It’s wonderful you’ve learned all the things you have. I think they’d be lucky to get you! Let us know how it goes.

GIVE IT A SHOT! you’re ONLY 59!! You dont have to be nervous for an interview, just be yourself. You should have a lot of confidence, as half of the people I have talked to at Lowes dont know how to do half of the stuff you mentioned you have done! (believe it or not) You will do fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Give it a try. After I retired (at 65) I got bored staying home cause I don’t have any hobbies that I can afford. I worked at Wal – Mart in sporting goods and tried doing janitorial work. At present I work part time at McDonald’s. I’m 71 and I was an automobile designer (draftsman) for 42 years.
